Q&A: i have read alot about building a koi pond but i am unsure of where to put the skimmer, filter and pump?

Question by Throbbing Wet Hole: i have read alot about building a koi pond but i am unsure of where to put the skimmer, filter and pump?
does anyone have a diagram of where to put all the stuff, preferrably the pond would be L shaped. or can you tell me please because videos on youtube etc… dont really say where the filter etc goes.

It doesn’t really matter. You just need one.

The filter will set up a gentle current around the pond no matter where you put it, so all the water gets moved and filtered eventually.

I would however suggest putting the intake and outlet at opposite ends to maximise the water circulation. The pump and filter can be put where ever you have space to fit them. Usually determined by the arrangment of the rest of your garden. But one idea would be to build a wooden box that can be used as a garden seat, and put the filter in there. Gives a handy place to sit and watch your fish, and hides the ugly filter plumbing.

The Internet is loaded with pond ideas. I have an 8000 gallon pond in my back yard. It has a thick liner.
The deepest point of the pond is 6 feet with a slope up to about two feet. We have a ledge going around the outer perimeter of varying depths for different kinds of plants. We outlined the pond with lots of stones, plants and flowers. Inside the pond we have lily pads, cat tails, and anacharis. We also keep and aerator going all the time. We have around 30 fish of different sizes and breeds. Last summer we had hundreds of fry hatch which I sold this year.
The most important things to remember are having lots and lots of plants because they keep the water clean. At least have a couple of fish because they produce waste that the plants feed on.
We keep our fish in the pond all winter (it has to be at least 2 and 1/2 feet deep to do so. Stop feeding the fish when the water temperature drops below 50 degrees and begin feeding in the spring when water goes above 50.
Anyway, a pond is wonderful and rewarding hobby, we enjoy it tremendously.

How can i build a pond for my baby red ear sliders?

I mean a place to live. I have 4 adult RES which live in a bathtub. And two baby RES ( not babies of the adults ) which I bought separately and which live in a bucket!
I want to make a pond for them about 1 or 2 meters by 1 meter.
My budget is around 50 dollars.
Can you please help me build it and is there a website for building RES ponds?

Well, what i did was put mine in an aquarium. I put a rock thing in the bottom so they had something to swim in and play around, and then i used tooth picks and corks to build a little raft, they loved it! I didn’t put fake plants, because they eat them sometimes haha. I know the aquarium and rock tunnel and rocks for the bottom will cost definately under $ 50
Make sure if you do this, fill the water only about 3/4 of the way, so they have room at the top, but they can’t get out. And don’t put fish in it, they eat them :)

Well first what kinda fish, second as a fisherman i know that fish like all types of depths,second how many and what type of pond are you trying to build,a preformed pond, or using a pond liner??? I need more info to answer further

I built a small pond last year for my goldfish, just dug out a whole, lined it etc. You do need to have pumps (I used a couple, one for a fountain in the middle of the pond, a one for a waterfall that flows into the pond). I also added areation (I use the same aerator that I used for my aquarium, but added a curtain bubbler), because goldfish need lots of air and the pond water has to keep moving or you’ll be overgrown by the dreaded string algae. If you can afford to buy a filtration system for your pond, do it. But ponds can be a LOT of maintenance until you figure out what works best for you. Remember to put your pond in an area where the fish will have shade in the hottest part of the day, otherwise the water gets to warm and algae will grow like crazy in the sun. The fish love to eat it, but once it’s overgrown, it’s a mess. (trust me, I know). I’m still new to pond life, others will know better than I do, but they are a lot more work than you think. Once it’s established tho, they are fabulous. We spend hours by the pond watching the fish in the summer while eating lunch or BBQ-ing. There are lots of sites on how to start a pond, just Google! Good luck!

prolly a small one,not much deeper than 5 feet…i would put some catfish,carp and bluegill in…
Does fish need running water?
can catfish/carp survive in such shallow water (not big cats and carp like 6 to 15 inch ones)

yeah. i have a 3,500 gallon pond like 3 feet deep. its kinda big. i have big goldfish(koi), gigantic catfish(like 13 inches), some sunnies(bluegill), and a few pickerel. and some small minnows. i think you do need running water. i have a waterfall and 2 filters. make sure you have lilly pads in there too so when it is really hot out the fish can stay under the lilly pads and they wont fry. it is really cool to throw fish food in it and see all of the fish come to the top..i would suggest get one. it is really cool. good luck :)

Better to go on-line to find lots of good ideas.
This is just a couple I found on-line, but there are many more. And these ponds are not just for certain areas, they are for anyplace in the U.S. that can be made. It’s just that in some areas of the U.S., we have to make special preparations for winter. We have a small one in our back yard and it doesn’t get any colder than SD in the winters.

Just look at these pictures and get an idea of what you like as far as style or maybe ideas from 3 or 4 different styles. That’s the whole fun of making your own pond.
