Building a pond – Enhance Your Yard By Adding A Pond
Building a pond in your garden will create an instant focal point. What better way to relax than sitting next to a pond and listening to water. However, before you start digging, there are a few things to remember to create the perfect backyard oasis.
Once you have chosen when your pond will sit, call your municipality to find out if there are any electric or gas lines running in that area. Try to stay away of older trees that will have significant root systems. Choose a location that will be visible from most of the garden for everyone’s enjoyment. For a more intimate retreat, tuck away your pond in a secluded area and landscape it heavily.
Contour the size and shape of your pond with a rope. Shapes are restricted when using a pre-formed pond. However, if you are using a liner, you are only restricted by your imagination. Be mindful to dig the plant terrace the exact size as what is in your pre-formed liner or around one foot wide and eight inches down if using a liner. Now would be a great time to verify that the pond’s edges are balanced. Unless you have a power outlet near the pond, don’t forget to dig a shallow trench to bury the PVC pipe that will hold the electric cord.
To prime the base of the pond, fill it with about one inch of sand. Also add sand on the terraced shelves. You can now place your pre-formed pond in the hole. If using a liner, begin laying it down. To prevent any issues, cut the liner four feet wider and longer than the actual pond. Flatten out any folds by pressing the liner down.
You can now begin to fill the pond. With a pre-formed liner, you want to begin backfilling the space underneath the pond and time it so that you are finished at about the same time the pond is filled. In the case of a liner, remember to continue pulling the liner taunt. If you are utilizing a pump to work a fountain or waterfall, place it at the bottom of the pond and hide the cord.
Now begins the fun portion – decorating up your pond. Start by laying down flat rocks on the border of your pond and stagger a second layer for a natural look. Overhang the rocks a bit over the water. Place the cord for your pump in between rocks and camouflage it with another flat rock.
Landscaping around your pond should not be rushed. Determine if you want your pond to be easily seen or should it harmonize with the rest of your backyard? To make your pond accessible, make sure you maintain at least once side clear. A preferred landscaping method around ponds is to build a feature on one end and one side while leaving the other end and side clear. Also remember to choose plants that will do well in a moist environment.
Now is the time to appreciate your hard labor. In most cases, water features may be one weekend projects. Take the plunge. Add one to your garden and be ready to enjoy lots of praise.
