look for the How-to link on this webpage…

http://www.watergarden.com/

nice folks with great info there….

you’ll need to be sure that your pump can ‘lift’ water high enuff to make it to the top of the waterfall… if not, you’ll need a bigger pump…..

Question by science_joe_2000: What are the rules for building a farm pond?
Long ago the federal government regulated farm ponds with help from the state and local officials. My local code enforcement officer knows very little about the regulations. I don’t want to do it twice, so how do I find the rules and the agencies?

Planning on building a pond?

Question by Noinoi says: Planning on building a pond?
What would be the right measurement for the area of a pond? I’m planning to have some fishies reproduce in it.

Best answer:

Answer by catx
Depends how much space you have! The bigger the better, and the deeper the better. If you’re in a temperate country and get cold winters you need the pond to be at least 3ft deep – not necessarily the whole pond, but a good portion of it – to allow the fish to successfully overwinter.

By providing a natural gradient and some border planting as well as floating plants Goldfish should naturally spawn come springtime and the fry should have places to hide (Goldfish will eat their own eggs and fry). I wouldn’t recommend having a pond any smaller than the equivalent of 600 US gallons for Goldfish. For Koi you need more like a minimum of 1000 US gallons. It would be good to invest in a proper pond filter also. See if there are any Goldfish or Koi clubs local to you, pondkeeping is very popular!

Q&A: I am building a pond. Which is better? To build a earthen spillway or a piped spillway?

Question by she sees: I am building a pond. Which is better? To build a earthen spillway or a piped spillway?

Best answer:

Answer by Roseann B
Depending on the size of the pond. I have made an earthen spillway for a 20 X 10′ pond, and lined with mortar and stone. Be sure it is strong enough that the overflow does not undercut the mortar and stone.

Q&A: Hi I am building a pond, and I need a float.?

Question by Melinda: Hi I am building a pond, and I need a float.?
I have researched it a little bit and know that I don’t want a metal float, I was just wondering if there is a type of plastic that is better for fish. I will mainly have goldfish in the pond.

Best answer:

Answer by Patrick Minnig
why would you need a float? I have a 1500 gallon goldfish, koi, and catfish pond without a float in it. wood will work, I don’t know any plastics that are better for fish than others.

Q&A: Is there any substitute for pond-liner in building a quoi pond?

Question by Jena M: Is there any substitute for pond-liner in building a quoi pond?
Where can i get a cheap container to be used as a home-made quoi pond?

Best answer:

Answer by Funky Bird
I’ve seen heavy-duty vinyl tarps used as a liner; it has the advantage of letting your pond be very free-form rather than a simple round or oval shape. You can usually find them at hardware stores.
